Today we’re discussing interviews, and in particularly 5 questions that I think are a complete waste of time, and what you should be asking instead. Here are the 5 top interview time wasters:
1) Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
Instead Ask: How long do you see yourself being happy in the role you’ve applied for? Or What are your long term career goals? Or Thinking of yourself 10 years from now what will you have achieved personally and professionally for life to e successful?
2) Tell me a bit about yourself
Instead Ask: If I asked one of your friends or family members to describe you, what would they tell me?
3) What are your weaknesses?
Instead Ask: What are the challenges you think you’ll face if you are successful in this role? or What are some of the skills you think you’d need to develop further to be successful in this role?
4) Can you use ‘insert name of system here’?
Instead Ask: Describe a time when you have had to learn a brand new software system. What was it, how long did it take you to master it and what methods did you use to assist you in learning it?
5) Why do you want to work for us?
Instead Ask: What do you know about our business? And What about what you know about us made us an appealing employer for you? or Describe the type of business you want to join, from a cultural, team and leadership perspective.
